I remember reading this book when I was little:
The story is about a dog named Biff, who wants to be a ballerina. Everyone says he can’t be one (“Dogs don’t do ballet!”), but in spite of what others say, he got his chance to be in the spotlight.
I thought this was just a work of fiction when I learned that there happens to be a real-life Biff! Her name is “Pig” (nothing wrong here, I have an Uncle named “Dawg”, and he calls his Siberian Husky “Bear”), and she happens to be the star performer of The Mutt-cracker.
Pig has a rare illness, called “Short Spine Syndrom”. This means that her spine is shorter than normal dogs. This gives her a strange appearance (like her hips are too close to her shoulders), but this enables her to stand on her hind legs and do the difficult maneuvers required by the ballet.
In The Mutt-cracker, Pig dons a tutu, a harness, and pretty pink underwear. Then she goes on a dance-off with the Sugar Plum Fairy and upstages her in the end! Who can resist this dog?
I wonder if I can be just as irresistible in pink underwear? Hmm…
The Muttcracker happens to be an annual holiday showcase by the Alabama Ballet Company. Pig wasn’t the only dog in the ensemble. There were 29 other dogs in the cast, and they all auditioned for the various roles. Of course, Pig bested them all (even the human actors).
Like all performers, Pig works hard during rehearsals. Here she is practicing a mini-pirouette with the Sugar Plum Fairy. Not bad for a dog with a short spine!
So if ever you’re in Alabama for the holidays, why not drop by the ballet and see the super cute pooches perform?
